DTM forced to move Norisring round

DTM organisers have been forced to change the 2013 schedule to avoid a clash between its Norisring round and the German Grand Prix. The FIA recently revealed that the German Grand Prix had been moved to create the space on the Formula 1 schedule for another European race in July . That left the GP clashing with the DTM's high-profile Norisring street race - usually attended by more than 100,000 spectators - on July 7, so organisers of the German series have moved that event to a week later.

Ducati test seat a step forward – Pirro

Michele Pirro insists joining Ducati as a test rider does not represent a backward step even though it will leave him without a full-time race programme for the first time in more than a decade. The Italian competed for Gresini in MotoGP's CRT class in 2012, effectively finishing best of the rest behind Aspar duo Aleix Espargaro and Randy de Puniet.

Report: Hyundai working to replace car keys with smartphones

Hyundai smartphone for car keys

Hyundai is working on technology that may allow you to access your vehicle with nothing more than a swipe of your smartphone. The automaker's i30 Connectivity Concept boasts an embedded NFC tag that allows the user to open the doors with a quick swipe. Drop the phone in the center console, and the driver can pair with the on-board touch screen and start the car. An inductive charging plate takes care of keeping the phone alive without having to fuss with cords or adapters. What's more, Hyundai says that the system can recognize individual smartphones, which means each user can have a customized experience.

Using the company's MirrorLink, the car can automatically sync not only contacts and apps, but also navigation destinations and streaming audio. More interestingly, the system uses technology available right now, and Hyundai says the system will be available on its next-generation of vehicles starting in 2015. While we're all for sending bulky key fobs to the scrap heap, hurdles like previous owner security concerns and the hitch of what happens if your phone dies before you can make it to your car will need to be overcome. You can read the full writeup over at Wired.

2012′s big stories: Ferrari’s resurgence

Over Christmas and New Year AUTOSPORT will be revisiting some of the biggest stories of the 2012 motorsport season and our coverage of them, starting with Ferrari's miracle title bid... It was not just for 20th anniversary nostalgia that AUTOSPORT ran a retro feature on Ferrari's disastrous 1992 car in the build-up to the new Formula 1 season. As Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa wrestled the uncooperative F2012 around the winter testing venues, it seemed as if 2012 would bring little but pain for a team under huge pressure to make up for previous season's near-misses and underperformance

Rumormill: Buick Verano to go turbo-only for 2014?

2013 Buick Verano Turbo

If VIN tags recently posted online prove accurate, the 2014 Buick Verano may be getting a new base engine. Presently the Verano makes use of GM's 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine in non-turbo trim; 2014 documentation appears to indicate that GM's entry-level luxury compact will instead feature a 1.6-liter turbocharged mill.

If this is the same engine seen in Europe, GM Inside News suggests it may offer 192 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque - useful improvements over the larger naturally aspirated mill's 180 hp and 171 lb-ft. More importantly, the downsized engine would likely improve on the Verano's current fuel mileage estimates of 21 city and 31 highway.

We like the Verano in both of its current iterations, but the 1.6 turbo engine sounds like a worthwhile upgrade if this reports turns out to be true. Plus, if more performance is your bag, baby, there's always the Verano's optional 2.0 turbo engine with an impressive 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft from just 2.0 liters of displacement.
