Ford’s Traffic Jam Assist Combines New and Existing Technologies

Ford, like most manufacturers, has been no slouch in developing technology focused on keeping drivers safe. In the past few years, features such as adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and parking assist have crept into almost every vehicle segment. Now, Ford is looking to combine these existing technologies in its Traffic Jam Assist, harnessing their [...]

Ekstrom frustrated by Q4 slump

Mattias Ekstrom described Norisring DTM qualifying as "the biggest disappointment for a long time," after his pole position hopes vanished in Q4. The Swede had set the pace in the second and third sections of qualifying - including a 48.822-second lap that was the fastest of the weekend so far - and was therefore the last man to set his Q4 time, which was the slowest of the four drivers that made it through to the one-lap shoot-out. After being beaten by HWA Mercedes drivers Gary Paffett and Jamie Green and RBM BMW's Augusto Farfus, the Abt Audi driver was at a loss to describe what had gone wrong, saying: "I had a clean lap, but it just wasn't quick enough

Turning Point: Road Atlanta

Classic Teams Championship: Round 8, Road Atlanta The drivers were all pleased to see the 2.54-mile sweeping layout of Road Atlanta back on the schedule and the venue for Round 8 of the Classic Teams Championship. This week there were 64 drivers, just 4 less than at the last round, and 14 official races over the four days. Over the weekend was also an iRacing Q&A event featuring the Lotus ‘79. This has led to an influx of drivers to the series over the weekend. Madom F1 had new recruit Pedro Marques, John Surtees Garages provided a car for Jason Dunfee and JC Racing returned to the track with Thomas Elliot. Missing from Road Atlanta were all three Alfa Romeo drivers, Michael Schmidt’s Lotus, Roland Seigl’s Rebaque and Brabham’s Dan [...]

MotoGP rookie rule officially dropped

The MotoGP's Grand Prix Commission has ratified the end of the rookie rule preventing first-year riders from joining factory teams - paving the way for Marc Marquez to potentially move straight into the works Honda squad in 2013. The rookie rule was implemented as part of MotoGP's 2010 cost-cutting push, and was aimed to spread talent around the satellite teams. Moto2 championship leader Marquez has been strongly linked to a factory Honda seat next season after Casey Stoner's decision to retire, but had the rookie rule stayed in place, it would have been necessary to place him at a satellite team for a year first.

Jaguar Adds V-6, Turbo Four, New Gearbox to U.S.-Market Cars for 2013

Like red meat and home runs, V-8 engines are vitalizing to the soul. As such, Jaguar’s all–V-8 lineup in the U.S. has been especially satisfying during the past few years. Alas, for 2013, that era comes to an end. The XF and XJ are each receiving additional engines—don’t worry, the eights hang around—along with new [...]

Di Resta rues strategy choice

Paul di Resta believes that Force India "missed a trick" by persevering with his one-stop strategy in the European Grand Prix. The Scot finished seventh after stopping just once, but suspects that had he adopted a similar strategy to both Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher, who stopped on lap 38 and 41 respectively, he could have finished more strongly. "I think the result says it all, we clearly missed a trick," he said when asked by AUTOSPORT about how his strategy worked out.

Rosberg frustrated with Hamilton

Nico Rosberg reckons he could have qualified higher than sixth on the grid if he had not encountered Lewis Hamilton's McLaren in the final sector of his out-lap. Perez expecting tough weekend

Sergio Perez is anticipating a difficult European Grand Prix weekend for the Sauber team. The Mexican, who finished third in the Canadian Grand Prix two weeks ago, believes that while Sauber will be competitive, he doesn't have a strong chance of becoming the season's eighth winner in Valencia. "It will be a difficult weekend for us in terms of this track," said Perez.

Aston Martin Vanquish configurator now online

Aston Martin Vanquish

If you've got a few seconds to spare, we suggest heading toward the Aston Martin website for a little virtual window shopping. The supercar manufacturer has officially rolled out the configurator for the new Vanquish, and while the options are limited to a gaggle of colors, a few wheel choices and some carbon fiber trim, it's still fun to figure out just how annoying we can make the new ultra luxury machine. Sadly, the company doesn't offer a paisley vinyl wrap to match our smoking jackets.

The online tool doesn't allow you to play with the interior options either, but the site does give visitors a good idea of what to expect from the cabin. Quilted leather seats in hues from tame to obscene and plenty of fine details are par for the course. Buyers can look forward to 556 horsepower from a 6.0-liter V12 as well as a chassis that's a full 25-percent stiffer than anything else on the VH platform. How much will it cost? Who knows, but it will hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 183 mph. We guess we'd take one without the paisley wrap.

Toyota buoyed by Le Mans pace

Toyota's Le Mans 24 Hours performance proved that it has the pace to fight with Audi, according to its racing team president Yoshiaki Kinoshita. The Japanese manufacturer entered a pair of TS030 HYBRIDs in the sportscar race last weekend, and although accidents prevented either car from finishing, Nicolas Lapierre did manage to lead the event during the opening hours. Kinoshita said that after being uncertain pre-weekend whether his team could pose a threat to the Audi hybrids and diesels, the pace shown has answered some key questions

Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala expects the lead drivers to be running further down on the road after qualifying for Rally New Zealand tomorrow. Tommy Milner says it will be difficult for the #74 Corvette team to fight back into contention for GTE Pro victory in this year's Le Mans 24 Hours, after the car shed its right rear wheel on the run up to Dunlop. Report: Pagani to debut ultimate Zonda R Evo at Goodwood

Pagani Zonda R - black - front three-quarter studio view

If you thought Pagani had replaced the Zonda with the Huayra, think again. The Modenese purveyor of the most exotic of supercars is apparently willing to continue building Zondas for moneyed buyers who still want them. And far from simply continuing the model it had, Pagani has been further developing the Zonda into ever-more extreme variants.

The latest, according to GTSpirit, will be the Zonda R Evo, a model Pagani is expected to bring to the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. The track-only model would, if speculation manifests, combine the best features of the existing Zonda R (pictured above) with the output of the latest Zonda 760 RS. That means competition-spec suspension, brakes, aero and rolling stock with a 760-horsepower incarnation of the V12 built for Pagani by Mercedes AMG. That, for comparison's sake, is within spitting distance of twice the output of the original Zonda C12 that hit unsuspecting roads at the turn of the millennium.

With that much juice, the Zonda R Evo is tipped to hit 62 mph in under 2.7 seconds and bag a top speed of more than 218 mph. Former Formula One driver and multiple DTM champion Bernd Schneider is expected to drive the ultimate-Zonda-to-date up the hill at the Earl of March's estate at the end of the month.

AASHTO Adds Designs to Bikeway Guide, But Not Protected Bike Lanes

Last week, AASHTO, the national association of state DOTs, published the first update to its bicycle facility design guide in 13 years (available online for $144). Report: New Acura design chief admits company went "a little overboard" with The Beak

2012 Acura ILX

Automotive News reports Toshinobu Minami, the new head of global design for Acura, says the company may have gone "a little overboard at some points" with the company's shield grille. Minami said Acura has had bad feedback on the design from multiple directions, but says the company isn't going to "buckle under that pressure." Instead of scrapping the beak design all together, the designer wants to keep the corporate look while simultaneously reaching further out toward a premium design language. Honda, meanwhile, will receive models with a sportier and more active-looking exterior. Acura recently debuted more demure interpretations of the shield grille on models like the ILX and the NSX Concept.

Minami says reactions have been somewhat less vitriolic compared to the past, and the designer contributes that in part to people growing accustomed to the look. It's either that, or we're all just tired of complaining about how awkward the Acura stable looks when the company is happy to run around with its fingers in its ears.
