Stoner delighted tyre tactic paid off

Casey Stoner said the fact that he took a different tyre strategy to his main rivals made his victory in the Laguna Seca MotoGP race particularly satisfying. The Honda rider has struggled with Bridgestone's revised hard tyre and chose to use a soft rear for the United States Grand Prix, in contrast to all the other frontrunners. But Stoner was able to overtake team-mate Dani Pedrosa and Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo and score his fourth win of the 2012 season.

Report: Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec in the cards?

Motor Authority has been apparently been exchanging whispers in the corner regarding the Veloster with someone from Hyundai, and has been told that there is "still left room in the lineup for a higher-performance variant" than the Veloster Turbo. The consensus in certain circles, including ours, is that the boosted version of the funky three-door is a healthy step above the base model but doesn't posses the true grit to joust with the segment's defining hot hatches.

Part of this could be considered intentional since, as we wrote in our review, "It is important to remember that the Veloster Turbo is every bit as much about sipping fuel as it is about performance." With the six-speed manual and regular unleaded you're going to get 26 miles per gallon city, 38 mpg highway. The best you'll get with a Volkswagen GTI is 21 city / 31 hwy, while the MazdaSpeed3 Touring checks in with 18 city / 25 hwy and those numbers for both cars are with premium gas.

A hypothetical "Veloster Turbo R-Spec" could be tweaked with more power and a retuned suspension to directly challenge other hot hatches. Also in its favor is that with an MSRP of $21,950 it's got pricing headroom between it and the $23,995 GTI and $24,000 MazdaSpeed3, even before factoring in Hyundai's propensity to load its offerings with extras. Nevertheless, let us stress the word "hypothetical" - this is speculation in the extreme. But now that we all know the potential is there, let us hope it's only a matter of time before it's realized.

Pedrosa relieved to finish after errors

Dani Pedrosa said he was relieved not to crash out of the United States Grand Prix after making it home for a third-place finish at Laguna Seca. Having joined Honda team-mate Casey Stoner and Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo in a three-way lead fight at first, Pedrosa ultimately fell seven seconds away and had to settle for the final step on the podium. "In the beginning I was comfortable in the group," said Pedrosa

Raikkonen still aiming for strong race

Kimi Raikkonen sees no reason why he cannot still deliver a good result in the Hungarian Grand Prix - despite failing to capitalise on the speed of his Lotus in Q3. The Finn ended up fifth on the grid at the Hungaroring, with team-mate Romain Grosjean securing a spot on the front row, after finding himself unable to extract the maximum performance from his car in the final qualifying session "We expected a bit more, the car has been good all weekend, but it was a bit more difficult in the last qualifying," explained Raikkonen. "I would rather be higher up, but that is how it goes." Despite having hoped to be higher up the grid, Raikkonen thinks Lotus' history of delivering good race pace means he can still produce a decent result in the race.

NASCAR approves 2013 car redesigns

The 2013 Sprint Cup series cars from the four participating manufacturers can now start being produced after NASCAR issued their final approval. The new models, which will better resemble the street versions of Chevrolet's SS, Ford's Fusion, Toyota's Camry and Dodge's Charger, will make their competitive debut next year at Daytona in February following two years of development. The final approval was based upon results from aerodynamic testing earlier this month, as NASCAR tried to equalize downforce and drag levels for all four different models.

Lewis Hamilton repeated his morning performance to set the fastest time again in second practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix, in a session disrupted by a heavy rain shower. Official: Team O'Neil offering two-day women's only rally class [w/video]

Christy Carlson rally racing her 2002 Subaru WRX

Christy Carlson - SCCA champTeam O'Neil has something special lined up for next month. The home of perfecting the art of rally driving on the East Coast will offer a special women's two-day school August 18-19. The class will feature all of the standard classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training with the school's regular instructors, as well as input from a couple of special guests who know more than a little bit about competing as a woman. Verena Mei, a former Formula D and Redline Time Attack driver and Christy Carlson, a National SCCA Solo champion, will both be on hand to instruct, encourage and answer any questions.

Carlson first crossed paths with Team O'Neil back in 2008, when she won a three-day course from the school while competing in SCCA. When she's not working on her dissertation in a quest to complete her PhD in Meteorology and Climatology, she's been busy in the SCCA rally world. She's also the first and only woman to walk away with a trophy at the SCCA Rallycross National Championships and was the quickest female at both Sno*Drift and the 100 Acre Woods events this year.

"There are lots of women who would love to take the course just as it is," Carlson said, "but with a women's only course, it gives women the opportunity to not feel like they have to compete."

The school will cover basics like left foot braking, using the throttle to steer the vehicle, accident avoidance, types of skids and the basics of weight transfer and pendulum turns.

"Both myself and Verena Mei will be there to help sit with the drivers and provide additional insight on techniques as female competitors."

The whole package will cost $1,897, and will include vehicles, safety equipment and lunch on Saturday. Head over to Team O'Neil site for more information. Watch Carlson lay waste to the 100 Acre Wood in her 2002 Subaru WRX by scrolling below.

While Team O'Neil is technically the first rally school in the country to offer an exclusively female curriculum, word has it other rally schools are set to do the same. Both Rally Ready in Austin, Texas and DirtFish Rally School in Snoqualmie, Washington are reportedly working on similar programs. Stay tuned.

Sebastian Vettel has played down the significance of changes that his Red Bull Racing team has had to make to its engine maps, in the wake of the controversy that erupted at last weekend's German Grand Prix . The world champion's team was summoned to see the stewards to explain the characteristics of its engine maps - which FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer did not believe complied with the regulations. Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez believe their fifth and sixth place finishes in the German Grand Prix was actually a lot less than their Sauber team was capable of if they had qualified better. Report: Buell fueled with $20M investment, plans $20K streetbike

EBR 1190RS

Erik Buell Racing has gotten its hands on $20 million from foreign investors in a first step toward starting production on a range of new, affordable bikes. The cash will be used to hire more staff and expand the company's current Milwaukee production facility to 54,000 square feet. Details are skinny at the moment, but Buell says EBR plans to start selling a $20,000 bike in line with the current EBR 1190RS (seen above), though with less hardcore components. That price tag puts the newcomer in the same playground as creations like the Ducati 1199 Panigale and well above the BMW S 1000 RR.

But the stack of cash doesn't mean EBR's plans are set in stone. It reportedly takes around $100 million to get a startup bike manufacturer off the ground with all of the necessary dealerships and production capability, which means Buell will likely continue to court investors for the foreseeable future.

EBR hasn't disclosed its mystery investor just yet, though the minds at Asphalt & Rubber believe the funds could have come from Hero MotoCorp, an Indian motorcycle manufacturer. The company has made waves about possibly acquiring Erik Buell Racing in the past, and the two motorcycle builders already have a strategic partnership in place.

Muller claims pole at Curitiba

World Touring Car Championship points leader Yvan Muller claimed his third pole position of the season as Chevrolet dominated qualifying for round eight of the series at Curitiba. Fastest in both free practice sessions, the reigning world champion was prevented from having a comfortable run to pole owing to the stiff challenge offered by factory Chevrolet team-mate Alain Menu

Study: Chevy earns most nods in 2012 J.D. Power APEAL study... sort of

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

On first glance, General Motors seems to have a lot to crow about in the latest JD Power APEAL rankings. After all, its Chevrolet brand claimed three segment awards - the most of any single brand - and Cadillac finished tied for eighth place overall in the 2012 edition of the study. But upon closer inspection, the results may not be quite so rosy for The General.

The APEAL study ranks new vehicles for how "gratifying" they are, based on owner evaluations of some 80 attributes. Yes, this is something of an automotive popularity contest. And the problem for GM is that, overall, its customers just don't like its products as much as those who buy from other carmakers.

Buick, Chevrolet and GMC all scored below the industry average in the 2012 APEAL study. Despite Cadillac's top ten ranking, the only luxury brands it managed to beat were Acura, Lincoln and Volvo, luxury bottom-feeders all. To be fair, we should note that Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Nissan also failed to finish above the industry average, though both Ford and Chrysler did, but barely.

The Chevrolet vehicles that claimed segment awards sent something of a mixed message. While the Sonic finishing first among subcompacts has to be seen as a huge win for GM, the other segment awards went to the Volt and Avalanche, in the compact and large pickup categories, respectively. The Volt is a great car, but it isn't a volume product and the Avalanche is a dead truck walking, slated to go out of production after the 2013 model year. The only other GM vehicle to make the top three in any segment was the Cadillac Escalade in the mostly moribund Large Premium Crossover/SUV. Nary a Buick or GMC is to be found on the list in any position.

Meanwhile, down I-94 in Dearborn, Ford has six vehicles in the top three in their respective segments, including winners in Large Crossover/SUV (Expedition) and Midsize Crossover/SUV (Flex). Even Chrysler managed to snag two segment awards (Dodge Challenger and Charger) and land three other vehicles in the top three in their segments.

If we really wanted to crown an APEAL winner, that title might just go to Audi, whose A8 had the highest score of any model and also won a segment award for the A6, while placing third overall. Porsche, however, could rightly lay the best claim to the 2012 APEAL championship, considering it had the highest brand score and won two segments, for the 911 and Cayenne.

Binder Secures Sprint Car Title At Irwindale

Irwindale Speedway holds a distinguished spot in the hearts of sprint racers. Within the ranks of iRacing, it is widely considered to be one of the best tracks in the schedule for the sprints, as well as being difficult to master. As the iRacing.com Sprint Car Series moved into Irwindale for the season finale, sim-racers knew this was the last chance to make a showing for themselves. For Alan Binder, who held a 43 point lead over two-time iSCS champion Vinnie Sansone, this was his time to shine once again. In Week 12 of the iSCS, attendance was up as 76 entries materialized for the week’s seven online races that went official. In a series that is used to an average of 3-4 races per week, the sight of so [...]

Rumormill: Cadillac XTS to become Opel flagship sedan?

According to Auto-News.de, Opel is considering using Cadillac's all-new big sedan, the XTS, as the base for its new flagship car, which would likely carry the name Omega.

WorldCarFans.com speculates that Opel could use GM's 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 that generates 304 horsepower or, possibly, a 2.8-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that creates 321 horsepower to power the vehicle. The European automaker could even use a 195-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine in this application - fine, since many of Europe's largest sedans are powered by smaller, more efficient engines.

Regardless of power, the Omega could arrive at dealerships by the end of 2013.

Red Bull accepts rules may be clarified

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner accepts that question marks over the legality of the team's engine mapping could lead to Formula 1's regulations being clarified. The FIA referred Red Bull to the stewards this morning to investigate irregularities related to the torque map used by the team's Renault engines during qualifying for the German Grand Prix . Although stewards subsequently deemed the Red Bull to be legal , the statement the FIA issued confirming that no action would be taken was equivocal.

Hunter-Reay fastest, Franchitti on pole

Points leader Ryan Hunter-Reay set the quickest time in qualifying for this weekend's IndyCar race at Edmonton, but the Andretti driver's 10-place grid penalty for an unapproved engine change means that Dario Franchitti will start from pole position on Sunday. Despite a rain shower during the second qualifying segment, the track had dried sufficiently for all of the drivers who had made it to Q3 to head out on slicks, and the order changed constantly as conditions continued to improve

Report: Truck carrying 23 passengers crashes, 12 dead

Eleven people are dead and 12 are injured after a Ford F-250 pickup truck carrying 23 passengers crashed in the southern Texas town of Goliad.

First responders were sent to the scene to investigate a single-car crash off of Highway 59, and were shocked to find the sheer number of people in the vehicle's bed and cab. According to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Gerald Bryant, "This is the most people I've seen in any passenger vehicle, and I've been an officer for 38 years."

Bryant said that the victims ranged in age, and even went so far as to share that he saw two children dead at the scene.

According to investigators, the white 2000 Ford F-250 was traveling North on Highway 59 Sunday evening, when it veered off the right side of the highway and struck two trees. Emergency crews arrived to find six people dead inside the cab of the truck.

Boarder Patrol will also take part in the investigation of the crash. While it is not yet known if the victims were illegal immigrants, it has not yet been ruled out.

Castroneves fends off Sato for win

Helio Castroneves denied Takuma Sato a maiden IndyCar victory in a close-fought battle around the Edmonton airport circuit. Castroneves and Sato had made the lead contest their own in the final stint, but the Brazilian was forced to work hard to keep Sato behind him. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver was the quickest driver on the circuit towards the end of the race and closed down a gap of more than three seconds to get close enough to have a couple of lunges at his Penske rival

Damage spoiled Maldonado’s race

Williams's chief operations engineer Mark Gillan said substantial damage to Pastor Maldonado's car from debris led to his lapped 15th-place finish at Hockenheim. The damage was sustained on lap 12 when the Venezuelan driver ran over a piece of carbon fibre that damaged the left hand side of his car. Maldonado had been confident of a strong finish after starting in fifth position on the grid and was running sixth when he hit the debris.
