McLaren ‘can’t let Vettel escape’

Jenson Button reckons McLaren has little chance of denying Sebastian Vettel Indian Grand Prix victory unless it can get among the Red Bulls at the start. With Red Bull having locked out the front row again , and track position having proven so crucial in ensuring victories, Button is under no illusions that polesitter Vettel cannot be left to get away. "It will be an important start to the race," said Button.

Defeated Pedrosa proud of title chase

Dani Pedrosa apologised to his team and supporters after his MotoGP championship defeat, but said he was still proud of his title campaign. Jorge Lorenzo clinched the 2012 championship at Phillip Island on Sunday with second place behind Casey Stoner, as Pedrosa crashed out of the lead on lap two. "Maybe it was too early to push," said Pedrosa.

Keselowski shrugs off poor qualifying

NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase leader Brad Keselowski is sure he will be able to recover from his worst qualifying of the season during Sunday's race at Martinsville, which he will start from 32nd on the grid. The Penske racer continued a streak of four consecutive weeks of qualifying 20th or worst with his result in Martinsville qualifying on Friday. But this starting position could prove the toughest to overcome as the track is NASCAR's shortest and slowest oval venue

Official: GM pumping $450M into Argentine plant for new model

GM Rosario Automotive Complex

General Motors has announced that it will invest $450 million in its Rosario Automotive Complex in Argentina between 2013 and 2015. The cash will go toward tooling up for an all-new Chevrolet product to be exported globally. Details concerning what that new vehicle could be or where exactly it will be sold are nil, though GM said it will be based on a current global platform and that it will serve both regional and domestic markets.

All told, the Rosario plant built 135,000 vehicles last year, and the influx of cash will help expand that operation considerably. You can check out the brief press release below for more information.

Video: FL man injured after attempting to show skills to football recruiters by jumping moving car

Florida man attempts to jump speeding car to impress football recruiters - video screencap

There are the right ways to get noticed by football scouts and there are the wrong ways. Performing life-threatening car stunts to show your skills are definitely in the latter category, but Bladimir Barreto, 19, of Palm Bay, Florida, decided that videotaping himself jumping over a moving car was an appropriate way to display his vertical jump to college recruiters. Instead of landing a spot on a college football team, though, Barreto landed himself in the hospital with serious injuries.

Attempting to mimic stunts performed by a certain crazy Swede and Kobe Bryant, Barreto had one of his brothers drive toward him in a '80s Honda Accord while another brother recorded it all. Instead of clearing the sedan, it looks like Barreto mistimed his jump, resulting in him being hit by the car and thrown into the air. The YouTube video description says that he suffered broken legs and a serious head injury, but USA Today did not give specifics, only saying that he was conscious when life-flighted to a nearby hospital.

The report does say that the police charges are pending against the driver of the car for not having a valid driver's license and reckless driving.

Warning: While not overly graphic, the video below could be disturbing to some viewers. And, obviously, don't try this at home.

Rosberg downplays rapid practice pace

Nico Rosberg and Mercedes believe that the German's fourth position in second free practice for the Indian Grand Prix is not a true reflection of the car's actual pace this weekend. The team has failed to score a point since Nico Rosberg's fifth position in Singapore and has struggled to match the pace of rival frontrunners since impressing with its race speed at Monza last month. And while Rosberg admits that the W03 is in better shape in Delhi than it was in Korea, he is not certain it is yet capable of challenging for fourth position on race day.

Official: Harley-Davidson Museum opens tsunami motorcycle exhibit

Filed under:

Ikuo Yokoyama was just one man among hundreds of thousands of people directly affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011, but his name will likely resonate with motorcycle enthusiasts for some time.

Yokoyama's 2004 Harley-Davidson FXSTB Softail Night Train was in a container box that was swept away during the tsunami in March 2011, and it washed up on the shore of British Columbia where it was discovered almost a year later. His motorcycle is now on display at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the exact same condition that it was found on the remote Canadian beach back in April.

After the motorcycle was traced back to Yokoyama, Harley-Davidson offered to have the bike restored and returned to its rightful owner, but instead he has asked that the motorcycle be kept in its current tattered and corroded state and displayed as a memorial to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Yokoyama lives in the Miyagi Prefecture, which was one of the hardest-hit areas of Japan, and in addition to his motorcycle, it's reported that he also lost his home and three family members as a result of the natural disaster.

Video: 75-year-old woman to drive around world in 91-year-old car

Heidi Hetzer is a serious driver, she always has been.

An accomplished businesswoman and local German celebrity, Hetzer has no intention of taking the easy road. She never has.

The 75-year-old racer plans on circumnavigating the globe along the same route taken by the first person ever to drive a car around the world: Clärenore Stinnes.

Stinnes did it in 1928 and Hertzer plans to one up the original driver by using her 91-year-old Hispano-Suiza roadster.

Of course, Hetzer will have no problems if the Hispano-Suiza breaks down. One of her first jobs in the '50s was as a mechanic at her father's Opel dealership. When her father died in the 1960s, Hetzer took over the dealership and then built it into one of the largest dealerships in Berlin.

In between fixing and selling cars, Hetzer also raced them. She has collected more than 150 prizes from numerous races spanning more than 50 years, the most recent in 2007 in a classic car rally, according to Wikipedia.

The legendary Berlin native will begin her newest journey in 2014.

Scroll down to see the video.

Sauber hopes he doesn’t miss F1

Peter Sauber hopes he does not end up missing Formula 1 after retiring from his role as team principal , but say he is immensely proud to be finally handing over the reins. Ahead of the Korean Grand Prix, Sauber announced that he was stepping back from F1 with immediate effect, with Monisha Kaltenborn replacing him. And although he is excited about the prospect of finally being able to relax for the first time since his outfit entered F1 in 1993, Sauber is also keeping his fingers crossed that he does not get withdrawal symptoms.

Video: Toyota GT86 fails moose test in spectacular fashion

Toyota GT 86 moose test video screencap

Much has been made about the Moose Test as of late. The evasive maneuver test popularized by Swedish safety experts is meant to simulate a driver unexpectedly encountering and attempting to avoid one of these majestic furry beasts. The test is performed by executing a split-second emergency lane change to determine if the vehicle can maintain control.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee supposedly failed the test recently in Sweden. Then it was alleged that the circumstances may have been rigged. Then it passed the German version of the test. It was all a bit confusing.

The makers of this video have apparently had enough of the Moose Test, which is why before you is a screen grab of a mock moose is in the middle of the road. That vehicle looming behind it? It's a Toyota GT86, overseas twin to America's Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. The fate of said moose? You're just going to have to scroll down to see the how the famously well-handling rear-drive coupe performs...

2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe recalled for bad curtain airbags

2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

Owners of certain 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupes will need to make an unscheduled trip to the service bay soon, as the automaker has just announced a recall due to faulty side curtain airbags. A total of 499 E350 and E550 models are affected, all of which were built between April 2 and June 29, 2012.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the stitching on the "right side window curtain airbag" - the passenger side - may cause the bag to not deploy properly. NHTSA states that this airbag may deflate more quickly than it's supposed to, reducing the overall level of protection.

The official recall will kick off in November, where Mercedes-Benz dealers will replace the faulty airbag in these affected vehicles. Scroll down to read the full NHTSA report.

Neal sets early Brands pace

Reigning British Touring Car champion Matt Neal was quickest in the first free practice session for the Brands Hatch season finale. The NGTC Honda Civics of Gordon Shedden and Andrew Jordan, running with more turbo boost than they have so far in 2012, set the early pace. Eurotech driver Jordan topped the timesheets for much of the damp session before Shedden recorded a 1m44.996s lap heading into the final 10 minutes

Binder Teams With Beauty and Beast for Thursday Fund Raiser

Alan Binder’s record with iRacing.com’s Sprint Car is no laughing matter. Out of 69 starts in 2012, Binder has won 51 races, as well as scoring 66 poles. By leading 88% of the laps he has run this year, Binder is no stranger to taking charge on the track. It’s no surprise that the five-time defending champion of the iRacing.com Sprint Car Series would also take charge in focusing on another situation that is no laughing matter – breast cancer. Breast cancer accounts for 22.9% of all cancers in women, and while it may be 100 times more common in women than in men, men tend to have worse results due to delays in diagnosis because of the rarity. Regardless of the risk factors for this disease, it’s necessary to [...]

Rebellion dominates, Pickett champions

Neel Jani, Nicolas Prost and Andrea Belicchi handed Rebellion's Lola-Toyota a dominant victory at this year's Petit Le Mans. The World Endurance Championship's top privateer team was a wildcard entry in the ALMS season finale, but after scoring pole position ended up controlling the race as the series regulars hit difficulties. Lucas Luhr in the ALMS points-leading Pickett HPD had matched Jani over the opening stint, the pair running nose to tail while rapidly pulling away from the rest of the field.
