WRC rounds fail to sign FIA contract

None of the events involved in the 2013 World Rally Championship have signed the FIA's proposed agreement for next year's series, according to AUTOSPORT's sources. The FIA issued the five-page contract on May 28 and stipulated the agreement had to be signed and returned by close of business on Friday June 8. Failure to do so would result in the event not being included on the 2013 calendar.

2012 Fiat 500 Sport Long-Term Update: It’s in L.A. Now, and It’s Not an Abarth

Our Fiat Cinquecento has reached the mezzo, the middle, the halfway point in our 40,000-mile opera of endurance testing, and so far the little 500 Sport is defying stereotypes by being resolutely reliable. Bahar dismissed from Group Lotus role

Dany Bahar has been dismissed from his role as CEO of Group Lotus with immediate effect, the Malaysian-owned sportscar manufacturer announced on Thursday. Just a fortnight after it was revealed that Bahar was being suspended following a complaint about his conduct, Group Lotus said that his employment contract had been terminated. In a statement issued by Group Lotus, it said: "The decision was made by the Board of Group Lotus plc following the results of an investigation into a complaint made against him by the company's penultimate holding company, DRB-HICOM Berhad." Bahar was the man who spearheaded the idea of rebranding the Renault team as Lotus for this season.

Vincent and Moll tame Laguna Seca

Monterey, California’s Laguna Seca road course hosted the “24 Laps of Monterey” in week four of the Red Sox Racing League’s 2012 Season Two schedule.  The 2.23 mile, 11 corner track is arguably one of the most exciting road courses in North America.  Action at the track begins with a fast and tricky downhill entry into the Andretti Hairpin in turn two, but fans everywhere come to the track because of the action they see in turn eight.  Known as “The Corkscrew”, the tricky corner forces drivers into a sharp downhill left-right series of corners that leaves them feeling like they’ve hopped onto a roller coaster. Brad Vincent has dominated the Class A field sweeping the first three events of the season, so it was no surprise when he once [...]

McLaren still seeking Button solution

McLaren has admitted that there is no simple solution to the set-up problems that Jenson Button has been suffering from in recent races. Button has endured a run of difficult weekends with poor qualifying performances in the past two events, and scoring just two points in the last three grands prix. McLaren is working hard on getting to the bottom of why Button's form has dropped off so suddenly, but its prospects of overcoming the issues have not been helped by a gearbox problem that limited Button's running in Canada on the opening day of practice

Report: BMW copyrights 2 Series, X2, M7, M10, etc.

BMW Emblem on white background

BMW looks to be on something of a name-grabbing spree. The German automaker has reportedly trademarked a number of new vehicle names, including 2 Series, X2, M7 and M10 among others. Of course, just because a manufacturer lays claim to a name doesn't mean there's a production model around the bend, but the monikers at least give us an idea of what's being thrown around conference tables in Munich. While names like 2 Series, X2 and M7 are no real shock given the rumors we've heard as of late, it is interesting to ponder what an M10 might be.

The German manufacturer also planted its flag on awkward names like Compactive, Compactive Tourer and Urbanic. All of those badges could conceivably find a home on the new line of front-wheel drive BMW models set to be introduced in the near future. Check out the full list of trademarked names over at E90Post.com.

Official: 2013 Ford F-150 debuts with slight enhancements

Ford
officially took the wraps off the 2013 Ford F-150 this morning in Waco, Texas.

While not a dramatic overhaul, the new F-150, which arrives later this year, includes a number of enhancements, including new grilles that are part of a fully made-over front facia, giving the pickup a closer family resemblance to the Super Duty. Ford has also added high-intensity discharge headlamps as an option for 2013. There will also be some new 18- and 20-inch wheel choices, as well as the addition of MyFord Touch inside the cab of the F-150.

The incremental changes to Ford's top-selling F-Series is one way the automaker keeps its pickups fresh, Doug Scott, head of Ford truck marketing marketing, told Autoblog. Instead of waiting for the next scheduled refreshing, Ford pushes new features into vehicles whenever they are available. Last year, Ford overhauled its powertrain options for the F-150, adding two V6 options.

Truck buyers appear to like Ford's approach. For the past 13 months, more than half of all F-150s sold have had either a 3.7-liter V6 or Ford's well-received 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 under their hoods.

Full-size pickups represent the fourth-largest segment in the United States, and Scott said the company thinks it could grow into the third-largest segment in the coming years. "We're tracking 1.6 million truck sales this year (for the segment)," Scott said. "For our longer-term projections, 2 million is not out of the question."

In American Courts, Drivers Still Innocent After Proven Guilty

When it comes to traffic fatalities, the scales of the American justice system are not weighted equally. Let’s compare two cases.
A year ago a young mother was charged with vehicular homicide after her four-year-old son was struck by a drunk driver who fled the scene. The woman’s crime, in the strict legal sense, was jaywalking (she [...]

Report: Judge cautions jurors over Toyota conduct in sudden acceleration case

Toyota Emblem

Judge James V. Selna has warned jurors in a wrongful death suit about suspicions surrounding Toyota. According to Inside Line, the warning comes tied to the automaker's conduct during an investigation of a 2008 Camry involved in a fatal crash allegedly caused by unintended acceleration. The single-car accident in Utah claimed the lives of the driver, Pual van Alfen, as well as one other passenger. Two passengers were also injured in the event on November 5, 2010. According to the report, two weeks later, Toyota inspected the sedan without the owner's presence or consent, including the onboard black box. Judge Selena cautioned jurors that they should treat the testimony of Toyota personnel who participated in the investigation with "greater caution than that of other witnesses."

Plaintiffs argued that without their own lawyers present during the inspection, data from the Event Data Recorder could have been changed or deleted entirely. The Judge said that while there was no evidence that Toyota did so, the fact that the automaker failed to notify the owner of the inspection casts a "cloud of suspicion" over the examination.

Gooden Scores First 2012 F2000 Win

iRacer Wyatt Gooden took his maiden 2012 F2000 Series Championship victory at Lime Rock Park, inheriting the lead after Robert La Rocca first tore off half a front wing dealing with lapped traffic, and Kyle Connery then went off in the late stages of the race, again, while working lapped traffic around the 1.53-mile circuit. Gooden stood on top of the podium after three straight top three finishes in the No. 6 Quantum Racing Services Van Diemen with Niki Coello finishing second in the RFR chassis, and La Rocca somehow coming home third with a missing left front wing. Report: Hyundai gets 20,000 applicants for 877 jobs in Alabama

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama - line worker

Less than a month ago, Hyundai announced it would be adding a third shift at its Alabama assembly plant, resulting in an additional 877 jobs. You'd imagine with Alabama running a 7.2-percent unemployment rate in April - ranking right in the middle of the 50 states - competition for those jobs would be pretty serious. But nobody, least of all Hyundai, expected this. As of May 22, the automaker had received some 18,500 applications, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.

To put that into perspective, the Montgomery metropolitan area has an adult population of just over 282,000, meaning the applicant pool at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama represents more than six percent of nearby residents. Hyundai was so flooded with applicants that it temporarily shut down the process on May 18, warning job seekers that any applications it received after that date would likely go unprocessed. Hyundai only expects to screen between 6,000-7,000 applicants according to the report.

The company began seeing applicants on May 14, and by working 13-hour days, it has been processing roughly 200 each day. Applicants are asked to take a multiple-choice test during the 90-minute interview and those that get asked back will be given a six-hour training course, according to the report. Hyundai expects the hiring process to be completed by mid-July, in advance of launching the third shift after Labor Day.

Exclusive: Volkswagen seriously considering Amarok pickup for Canada

2012 Volkswagen Amarok - front three-quarter view, white

Full-size pickups continue to rule the sales roost in North America, and there frankly hasn't been much action in the small and midsize segment to generate new interest. Ford finally put its Ranger out to pasture, the Ram Dakota is gone and a Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon replacement has a ways to go before it hits the market. The category's remaining imports - Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier and Honda Ridgeline - aren't exactly fresh, and the long-promised Mahindra model hasn't exactly worked out. But surely there still has to be a market for a smaller, fully modern pickup, right?

"Bottom line? We are very interested, but are proceeding very slowly and very cautiously."

Apparently Volkswagen thinks there might be. Autoblog has learned that VW is seriously investigating selling its handsome Amarok pickup in Canada. According to Thomas Tetzlaff, Media Relations Manager at VW of Canada, the German automaker is "presently in the 'evaluation stage,' where we are pouring over data with a fine-toothed comb. Bottom line? We are very interested, but are proceeding very slowly and very cautiously."

Thanks to a number of tipsters, Autoblog has discovered that VWoC is actively discussing the Amarok with its dealer body, which in turn has been gauging customer interest in the truck. Tetzlaff confirms: "Yes, we have had discussions with our dealers and they have given us some very positive feedback. The challenge is to justify the project 'on our own'." Past history suggests that VW's Canadian arm is up to the challenge - as recently as 2009, VWoC offered the Golf and Jetta City models without an equivalent U.S. model.

This suggests that VW is considering importing a TDI diesel model.

Tetzlaff would not confirm which cab styles and powertrain options are under consideration, but he did say, "The powertrain solution would certainly give Canadian buyers a real alternative in the light pickup market." This suggests that VW is considering importing a TDI diesel model. At present, VW builds the Amarok with one of three diesel powertrains in Argentina, offering 138-177 horsepower and 250-310 pound-feet of torque. The Amarok is assembled in both single and double-cab configurations with either rear- or four-wheel drive and is sold in South America, Europe, Russia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

While sounding optimistic about the Amarok's chances, Tetzlaff cautioned, "Our desire to bring such a product to market needs to be balanced with a strong business case. The costs we would need to incur in order to import the vehicle need to be factored into the equation and they are not insubstantial... the project is nowhere near a 'green light' just yet."

And what about here in the States? VW spokesman Mark Gillies: "VW of America has absolutely no plans to sell the current version of the Amarok in the U.S."
