Video: Here's Mini's R/C Cooper in action at the Olympics
Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Mini
There were requests from all around to see video of the electric "Mini MINI" radio-controlled cars that are being used to retrieve javelins, hammers, shots and discus' (disci?) at the London Olympics, and here it is.
The Olympic-liveried electric Cooper hatchbacks in roughly 1/4-scale ply the infield grass. The couriers are loaded up by judges in the field, who slot the particular sporting implements into holders built into the roofs, then the cars are driven back to the judges near the throwing area for retrieval.
Based on how many comments on the Mini R/C cars we've seen that are some variation of "Do want," we wouldn't be surprised to see these again somewhere else. You can watch them work in the videos below.

BikeLink puts the brake lights on the back of your neck [w/video]
Filed under: Etc., Safety, Videos, Motorcycle
When you're on a motorcycle any time of day, but especially at night, giving drivers in cars the best chance to see you before they hit you is priority one. That's the need addressed by BikeLink, a CHMSL and then some for the two-wheeled set. A band of lights that attaches to the base of a helmet, the BikeLink can flash all of the indicators found on the bike: right and left turns, hazards and reversing, and it can operate as running lights.
It does this via a small transmitter that hooks into the bike's wiring harness - once its wired up it operates wirelessly. Its inventor says the BikeLink's lights can be color-matched to any hue, their flash patterns can be controlled with an app, and you can sync multiple helmets to one bike or sync up to two bikes to one helmet.
You can't buy one just yet, though - the BikeLink is a project on Fundable seeking $75,000. At the time of writing it's up to $8,376, with pledges starting at $109 that will get you the unit. Check out the video below to see it in action, then head on over to Fundable to find out more about it.

Video: VT farmer goes on rampage, crushes 7 police vehicles with tractor [w/video]
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Videos, Work
As you can see from the screenshot above, the Orleans County Sheriff's Department in Vermont did not have a good Thursday. At 12:40 pm yesterday, they received a 911 call that a tractor was running over police cruisers. The location of the crime? Their very own sheriff's barracks! The man behind the wheel of the tractor has been identified as Roger Pion, a Newport, VT farmer who was reportedly angry over a previous arrest for a minor violation.
In a scene that sounds straight out of Hazzard County, the officers stormed outside, but the culprit was gone, and they had no uncrumpled vehicles with which to pursue to Pion. The sheriff's department called in, well, everyone - Vermont State Police, Border Patrol, and Newport City Police, who finally tracked the offender down. Pion was about a mile and a half down the road when they found him, at which point he took off on foot and was soon after apprehended and arrested.
The damage, totaling an estimated $250,000 included six cruisers and an unmarked police van.
While the original offense Pion was upset over was for marijuana possession and resisting arrest, he now reportedly faces charges including aggravated assault, unlawful mischief, gross negligent operation and leaving the scene of an accident.

Official: Jackson Racing releases new supercharger system for Honda CR-Z
Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Hatchback, Honda
Jackson Racing, the guys who have been modifying and racing Hondas (and Acuras) for more than thirty years, have announced the arrival of a new supercharger system for the Honda CR-Z equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. The bolt-on blower may effectively address the primary complaint lodged against the frugal two-seater, its lack of sporty grunt.
As of now, the supercharger system has only been engineered for the manual gearbox (a clutch upgrade is recommended for those who drive aggressively), but the tuner is evaluating the demand for the automatic transmission. There are three different kits, all providing the same horsepower, with the most basic system starting at $3,995. Check out all the details in the press release below.

Auctions: Incredibly awesome pedal cars going up for auction
Filed under: Classics, Auctions, Ford, Toys/Games
For car guys, pedal cars have an allure that survives long past the days when our short, stubby legs provided all the horsepower we needed. Which explains why people with the means have no problem paying as much as $12,000 for a hot-rodded, pedal-powered roadster. Take for instance the group of nine pedal cars being auctioned by the Petersen Automotive Museum during its Deuce Week. The first three will be auctioned on August 18 at RM Auctions in Monterey.
Pictured above is Rad Rides by Troy's shrunken version of a 1932 Ford Salt Flat Racer. Moon disc wheels and custom-crafted suspension parts make this car look like it just rolled outta Bonneville, where it was expected to break numerous land-speed records for kid-powered vehicles. Unfortunately, the driver unexpectedly needed a nap and forfeited his time slot, which explains the lack of salt spray on the body.
Steve's Auto Restorations in Portland created a hot little '32 Ford with leather interior, leather sliding top, stainless tube grille and a "mini Art Deco 1920s dash gauge cluster."
Hollywood Hot Rods calls their entry the 1932 Ford "Respect Tradition" Custom Pedal Car. Despite the miniature (faux) Hemi engine up front, the builder says they gave special attention to ensure the car can still be powered by pedal. It's an awesome recreation of the shop's full-size car including the Duvall split windshield.
The remaining six pedal cars were done by H&H Flatheads, So-Cal Speed Shop, Winfield Rod & Custom, Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop, Fastlane Rod Shop, and the students of McPherson College Automotive Restoration. More information on those cars will be available from Petersen later. All proceeds go to help underprivileged children visit the Petersen Museum.

Official: 2013 Nissan Pathfinder images, specs released [w/videos]
Filed under: SUV, Crossover, Nissan, Design/Style
Nissan has just taken the wraps off of its handsome new 2013 Pathfinder, touting 30-percent better gas mileage, svelter unibody construction and room for seven people.
Built on the same platform as the Infiniti JX luxury utility that's already on sale, the Pathfinder hopes to make a serious comeback as it drops its body-on-frame packaging for a unibody. It may lose some of its ruggedness, but that's okay by Nissan, as they say it's not what its buyers really wanted.
"The majority of our customers just don't go off road," says Tom Smith, director of SUV marketing at Nissan. "They're concerned with gas mileage, all-weather capabilities and having enough space for their families."
Indeed, most carmakers are turning their once top-selling sport utilities into unibody people haulers - witness the Ford Explorer. Others, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Honda Pilot have always maintained unibody roots. In the case of a vehicle like the Pathfinder, the switch should result in improved ride, packaging and weight at the expense of towing capacity and off-road capability.
Changing the Pathfinder's architecture allowed Nissan to shed 500 pounds and achieve 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway in the front-wheel drive model, which weighs in at 4,149 pounds. The all-wheel drive model (which adds 100 pounds) will get 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
Powered by Nissan's 260-horsepower, 3.5-liter DOHC V6, the Pathfinder still has enough muscle to tow 5,000 pounds (last year's V8 model could tug up to 7,000). It will use Nissan's next-generation CVT as well, which improves gas mileage through increased ratio spread and lowered internal friction. Available amenities will include heated and cooled seats, Around-View Monitor and Easy-Fill Tire Alert.
Nissan hasn't announced pricing, but says that a base model should start around $28,000 when it arrives later this year.
Scroll down to read the full press release and check out some video footage of Nissan's new family bruiser.

Video: Man being dragged by pickup calls 911
Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety, Videos
We're not exactly sure what to say about this video, other than to point out yet again that the world can be a messed-up place to live. A man walking in the parking lot of what we think is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, was hit by another motorist in a white truck. We can't say whether it was on purpose or malicious... until the driver seemingly chose not to stop and make sure the man he hit was uninjured.
But wait, it gets worse.
The driver of the truck fled from the scene with the man attached to the truck bed. We're not entirely sure how the victim was attached - possibly by clothing caught between the bodywork - but he apparently had enough freedom of movement that he could take out his cell phone and call 911.
The driver of the truck was arrested for a litany of crimes, and the victim managed to escape with nothing more than cuts and bruises. Oh, and a great story to tell his grandkids. See security footage of the event in the news video below.
