Marquez dominates at Indianapolis

Marc Marquez reasserted his authority over the Moto2 field by cruising to his fifth victory of the year at Indianapolis. The championship leader hit the front by lap five of 26 and then calmly pulled away, his Monlau Suter crossing the line 5.9 seconds clear of title rival Pol Espargaro's Pons Kalex to extend his cushion in the standings to 39 points

Pedrosa dominates second practice

Dani Pedrosa dominated MotoGP's second practice session at Indianapolis, going fastest early on and spending much of the running more than one second clear of the field. It wasn't until the final 17 minutes that the pack began to respond to Pedrosa's dominance, and even then only Yamaha's Ben Spies was able to make serious inroads. The Texan improved his own best several times as he established himself a clear second fastest.

Season championships earned at Suzuka

Season Two of the Red Sox Racing League’s 2012 multi-class racing schedule consisted of twelve races over a 13 week stretch from May to August of 2012.  Thirty drivers began the season, with 19 driving the Honda Performance Development ARX-01C (HPD), and 11 electing to drive the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R.  Drivers needed to finish well in nine of the twelve races on the schedule if they hoped to compete for the overall season championship.  Although the C6R field had few drivers, 7 of the 11 who chose the car completed the minimum number of races to compete for the Class B championship.  Only 8 of the 19 HPD drivers managed to do the same. Brad Vincent had secured his position as the overall winner of the Class A field before [...]

Official: MacGyver thinks the Mercedes-Benz Citan is the right tool for any job [w/video]

One of the neatest things to do overseas is find U.S. stars hawking foreign goods, like Kevin Costner fronting for coffee in England and Bill Murray selling whiskey in Japan. Turns out MacGyver, aka actor Richard Dean Anderson (click the image above to enlarge), wasn't to be left out of the action, having been named the "hero" to help sell the Mercedes-Benz Citan.

For those of you who don't even know who MacGyver is, he was the protagonist in a US. television show that ran from 1985 to 1992, his signature trait being that he could fix anything with little more than some duct tape, a paper clip and a piece of string. That is what makes him the perfect spokesman for the Citan, advertised by Mercedes as being "the perfect tool for every job."

There's a press release below that speaks briefly about the Citan's merits, such as its three different available lengths and asymmetrical rear doors. But Mercedes doesn't half-ass things, and what's even better than the presser is the trailer for a film called MacGyver und der neue Citan that will be released September 18. It's in German so we don't even know what they're saying, but it looks awesome. Scroll down to check it out.

Round One and the start of a fresh season saw the iRacing.com V8 Supercars Series presented by BigPond return to where it all began last season at Road America. This time they would tackle the circuit with a fresh tire model and an updated caster limit and also increased tire degradation. Madison Down would continue his good form from last season and put down an amazing qualifying lap of 2:10.069, more than .4s quicker than his nearest rival Justin Ruggier (2:10.482).  Vail Riches would start third just two tenths back with Scott McLaughlin starting fourth and John Emerson in his new team starting in fifth. Although he didn’t have the greatest of starts, Down nonetheless jumped into the lead with Riches making the move on Ruggier for second.  Back in [...]

Video: Watch Monster Tajima's new electric race car whir up Pikes Peak

The car we were most excited to see at this year's Pikes Peak Hill Climb was undoubtedly Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima's new one-off electric racer. The radically styled car, called the 2012 Monster Sport E-Runner Pikes Peak Special, represents a new challenge for the Japanese racer, who has won the event every since since 2007 and has set the overall course record twice including last year.

Of course, with a new race car comes unexpected problems. While Tajima managed to run each of the practice days trouble-free - and fast - he sadly wasn't able to complete the race this past weekend due to electrical problems. His quest to remain king of the mountain and hold the best time not only the Electric division but overall will have to wait until next year.

Monster's time on the mountain wasn't completely fruitless, though, as he came away with some great footage of his practice runs from various angles on the car courtesy of GoPro. Scroll down to watch the videos for yourself.

Domino's wants you to design the ultimate pizza delivery vehicle [w/video]

When you want the crowd to help you design something automotive related, Local Motors seems to have become the go-to. The Phoenix-based company that birthed the Rally Fighter has since collaborated with DARPA, Edison2 and Peterbilt among others, and now it can add Domino's Pizza to the list.

The pizza pie maker wants to create, with your input, the Ultimate Delivery Vehicle that will ease the 10 million miles per week its drivers do. A five-part design competition will begin today and end on February 19, 2013, with each phase covering a different aspect of the vehicle: design, packaging, interior, surfacing and rendering. After that will come the prototype... and eventually, better pizza. Or a better pizza experience, at least.

For insight into the needs of a pizza deliverer, the contest will be joined by a national television campaign featuring the Domino's CEO doing ride-alongs with "delivery experts" and soliciting feedback. The particulars are now available here, and there's a video and press releases from Domino's and Local Motors just below.

Four-time champion Gordon finally got a break in a season plagued with bad luck, moving up from 27th on the grid to claim a record sixth win at the track known as the 'Tricky Triangle'.

Tennessee Passat Factory to be a Blueprint for Most Future VW Plants

“Is this a GM town or a Ford town?” I ask the driver of our antediluvian Chevy Express as we enter an endless parking lot. A sea of pickup trucks and late 1990s Detroit tanks defines the landscape here as much as the lush tree canopies and valley. ”Both,” he drawls, while I’m stumbling out of the [...]

2012 Ram 1500 Special Services First Drive: It’s for a Cop (and Other Agencies)

Even casual viewers of the long-running television program Cops can agree on the two universal truths of the show: Remaining shirtless during questioning is a tacit admission of guilt and the designation “tattoo artist” is highly subjective. But to dedicated viewers, an unintentional subtext has begun to present itself: The standard four-door police cruiser is [...]

Fifth not good enough, says Brawn

Mercedes boss Ross Brawn says fifth place in this year's championship will not be enough to satisfy the team's ambitions. IndyCar title contender Helio Castroneves will be issued with a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday's race at Mid-Ohio after the Penske team opted to make a strategic engine change. Overfinch does terrible things to Range Rover Sport, Evoque

Overfinch Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Overfinch Land Rover Range Rover EvoqueWell, now. This is different. The minds at Overfinch have turned their attention to the Land Rover stable and have cooked up a couple of, um, unique versions of both the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. We can certainly get behind the notion of the GTS-X, a slammed Sport with 575 horsepower at the driver's beck and call. While the front fascia is a little garish, the bright orange paint and colossal split-spoke rollers are just demented enough to tickle our fancy. Of course, for $230,100, it better.

Then there's the purple people eater Evoque. Overfinch saddled the interior with white leather, bolted on a set of 22-inch wheels and dipped the whole concoction in some very purple paint. We can't say that's a direction we would have gone, but we can also safely assume we aren't Overfinch's target demographic, either. Both creations will be at the Salon Prive London starting September 5. Check out the full press release below.

Allen Conquers Tricky Triangle

It is said so often that it becomes somewhat meaningless, but the saying “A good start is key to a good finish”, has never been more true in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS). Last season Joshua B Gerrald and Cody Byus finished first and second in the opening week at Talledega, and went on to finish first and second in the overall championship at season’s end. That doesn’t mean the folks at iRacing.com should start the trophy engraving just yet as Season Three kicked off last week in Pocono, but it is definitely a sign of who will be in the hunt. Lots of big names near the top of the board, but none bigger than former NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) driver Jeremy R Allen taking [...]

Report: Nissan: 85% of vehicles to be built in North America by 2015

Nissan is determined to grab eight percent
of global market share by 2016, and is investing heavily in its North American facilities to make that happen. After a $5.2 billion cash infusion, Nissan will grow by 9,000 jobs, expand capacity by 425,000 vehicles and 200,000 lithium-ion batteries.

With its existing NA plants, Nissan already produces all its core models here. But by 2015, the company plans to build at its North American plants 85% of all Nissan and Infiniti models sold in the U.S. Nissan's Smyrna, Tenn. plant will soon add the Leaf and Rogue to its lineup and the Canton, Miss. plant will add the Sentra to its truck production. To pull off that expanded lineup, Canton will get 1,000 new jobs boosting its payroll to 4,500 workers.

Nissan also has an engine plant in Decherd, Tenn., which will add 90 jobs this year and up to 400 new jobs eventually, to help build electric motors for the Leaf as well as Daimler.

In Mexico, Nissan plans to spend $2 billion to add a third plant with 3,000 workers making 175,000 subcompacts by late next year.

Finally, Nissan's Farmington Hills, Mich. research group will get 150 new co-workers for vehicle engineering and development.

Video: Check out VW's wireframe Beetle swimming with sharks

We recently told you about the Volkswagen Beetle shark cage constructed as a tie-in with Discovery Channel's Shark Week, now you can see it in action. Well, briefly - the video below spends a lot more time talking about it than actually showing it in action, but you'll just have to tune into Shark Week (next week) for that.

The wireframe Beetle-shaped cage that can be driven on the ocean floor is said to be just a quarter-inch off the dimensions of a Beetle Turbo. However, probably the most important thing about any of this is that it has thrusters, which we think should absolutely be a production option starting right now. Scroll down for the preview.
