Video: This Irishman really likes the Toyota GT86

Okay, okay - by this point in time just liking the Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, what have you) doesn't make you special. Even if you're a sort of funny sounding, funny looking Irishman, who probably isn't the most seasoned car reviewer ever, digging the GT86 is not news.

However, if, when you choose to publish your ten-minute-long review, you include exclamatory phrases about your own pubic hair, Ozzy Osborne's drug habit and "gentleman vegetable stuff," well sir, then you'll have our attention.

Don't give up on this video, available down below, after the first couple of minutes, we implore you. The silver-tongued Irishman doesn't really get warmed up until four minutes in, or so. Believe us, it's worth the wait.

BRM Driver Streaks to CTC Lead

Lotus makes the early running in new-look championship Pre-season, as with all series in 2013, S1, the CTC and its associate Lotus 79 championship moved to a 7 days a week schedule, but initial reaction to the published schedule was very negative. Eventually a revised schedule was published which met with approval of the drivers although the four hours per race met a lukewarm reaction. The fact remained, however, that iRacing have clearly taken an exciting twist to championships this season and, most likely, are aware that some experiments will be more successful than others. The more enthusiastic drivers took full advantage of the ability to race on Tuesday and 11 sim-racers took to Brands Hatch in the first race of the new season early on Tuesday morning, with Tony [...]

2013 Chicago Auto Show - overhead banners

On the international circuit, the Chicago Auto Show often gets slighted for being a rather dull show in terms of actual news and major vehicle debuts. But the Chicago expo is still hugely important. Not only is it the largest show in terms of overall square footage, it serves as the largest consumer showcase, with the highest amount of foot traffic from consumers. Sure, a lot of what's new here pales in comparison to all of the shiny sheetmetal we saw in Detroit last month, but it's all still very important.

As is our tradition, we've picked our favorite cars of the show (personal opinions, mind you - no fancy official-type or "most important" stuff here) and have compiled them in our usual Editors' Choice format for your perusal. Have a look below to see what caught our eyes.

Hamilton crashes on Mercedes debut

Lewis Hamilton's first proper day of Formula 1 testing with Mercedes got off to a bad start on Wednesday when he crashed the team's new W04. The Briton, who has joined the team from McLaren, had been third quickest in the morning when, after 15 laps, he ran off the track at the Dry Sack hairpin. Television footage of the incident showed he had locked up in the braking area of the corner, before skipping across the gravel trap and nosing into the barriers.

Grand Touring Cup Season Debuts at Daytona

Undoubtedly among the most prestigious race tracks in the world, let alone the United States, Daytona International Speedway hosted the first week of iRacing’s exhilarating Grand Touring Cup racing.  The vehicles in contention? The FWD, 170hp German Volkswagen Jetta TDI cup sedans, the classic Japanese 170hp Mazda MX-5 Cup cars and the popular 177hp American Coupe Pontiac Solstices, guaranteed to produce plenty of action from flag-to-flag. With cars this close, the racing was as unpredictable as Florida’s weather. The famous 3.56 mile road course used in the running of the Rolex 24 offers some unique and challenging corners; 12 to be exact. Most challenging of all for the sim-racers in Week One seemed to be the Bus Stop chicane on the backstretch, and Turn One, which flows down into the [...]

Sim-Racing — An Indispensable Tool

January 25-26-27 was a remarkable weekend for sim-racing in general, and iRacing in particular.  iRacers co-drove in five of the six class-winning cars in the Rolex 24 and the BMW Performance 200. Specifically, that would be Juan Pablo Montoya (DP), Dion von Moltke (GT), Nelson Canache/Jim Norman (GX) and Jack Roush Jr. (GS).   In Sebring, meanwhile, three more iRacers – Andre Gomes, Connor Clifford and Javier Cantu-Lucero – finished 1-2-3 in the inaugural Skip Barber Racing School IndyCar Academy Shootout. The point being that motorsports simulation has ceased becoming a useful tool in a racer’s arsenal; it now borders on the indispensable. Click here to read the full story on racer.com.

Ready for a 45 Minute Roller Coaster Ride?

The third round of the Late Model Road Racing World Series will be broadcast live from Lime Rock Park on latemodelroad.com this Sunday, (February 10) at 22:30 GMT. From the bumpy Big Bend, to the challenging Uphill with the chicane, through the fast ninety degree West Bend turn, to the exhilarating Downhill turn, this little race track has everything to put the series into flames right on its third round! As predicted by many after the first round at Phillip Island, Mosport saw a busy race, with lots of surprises in a very short period of time. Claridge was the biggest one, collecting one bonus point while taking pole position, but dropping to 16th and finishing four laps down due to a bad pit stop and not much luck trying [...]

Lotus sure it has all it takes to win

Lotus has everything it needs to be fighting at the front of the field in Formula 1 this year, reckons its technical director James Allison. Ahead of a season where the Enstone-based outfit has set its sights on breaking into the top three in the championship, Allison believes that the infrastructure at his team is well placed to deliver just that. Video: Tel Aviv woman's car painted into handicap spot and then towed

Tel Aviv parking video - screencap

As a general rule, we try to follow a few simple principles throughout the day, and one of the most important is, "don't anger the road workers." Why? The guys and girls responsible for taking care of our nation's roadways wield the seldom-seen power to seriously put a kink your day. If you need proof, look no further than the clip in the video below. In it, workers in Tel Aviv, Israel carefully paint a handicap space around an otherwise legally parked vehicle. After they finish, it doesn't take long for a tow truck to come along and haul off the "offending" sedan.

The owner was then fined around $270 for being illegally parked, and took to Facebook to vent about her situation. Local authorities got wind of the situation and quickly apologized, saying, "This was a severe mistake and a case of incompetence that the city of Tel Aviv does not accept." The city is reportedly also working to make sure something similar does not happen again. Check out the scene in the video below.

Reports as far back as 2011 originally suggested the Italian-branded luxury SUV would be built in Detroit alongside its Jeep Grand Cherokee relative. Marchionne now says Fiat will construct both Maserati and Alfa Romeo vehicles in Turin, but has thus far declined to comment on exactly which models will be manufactured at the plant.

Right now, the factory is only running a few days per month, but Fiat has committed to investing around $1.63 billion to relaunch Maserati, and a fair slice of those funds could go toward revamping the Turin plant. Marchionne also made it clear that the Chrysler dealer network in the US will play a large role in the future success of the Alfa Romeo brand.

Set to bow in 2014 and hit dealers by 2015, the Maserati Levante is expected to take cues from the brand's 2011 Kubang concept shown above. As the Trident's first SUV, the Levante is expected to compete directly with the Porsche Cayenne and Land Rover Range Rover.

Schumacher to have Mercedes role

Michael Schumacher will stay involved with Mercedes, but in road car development rather than its Formula 1 team. When the German legend retired for a second time at the end of the 2012 season, Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn hinted that the seven-time champion would maintain an involvement with Mercedes. Schumacher returned as an advisor to Ferrari during his first F1 retirement from 2007-09, but Brawn said there would no repeat of this at Mercedes as Schumacher now had other interests
