Button: Alonso more deserving of title

Jenson Button reckons Fernando Alonso is the more deserving of the two Formula 1 world championship contenders given what he has achieved with the troublesome Ferrari this year. Alonso goes into this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix decider 13 points behind Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel. Button, who clinched his world title at Interlagos in 2009, said that Alonso's consistency had impressed him, whereas Vettel's finest performances had come in a period when the Red Bull was the fastest car.

Report: 2013 Ford Fusion Energi to start at $39,495

Ford Fusion Energi

Car and Driver reports the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi will carry an entry price tag of $39,495 before a $4,000 federal tax credit. That chunk of coin will land you behind the wheel of an SE trim plug-in hybrid, though if you feel like spending a few more pennies, the Fusion Energi Titanium can be had for $40,995. Those both offer a combined driveline output of around 188 horsepower and an all-electric range of around 20 miles depending on driving habits and ambient temperature.

Still, Ford may have a hard time convincing buyers to spend their money on the Energi when the (albeit smaller) Chevrolet Volt lands at $39,145, plus destination, and offers 40 miles of all-electric range. Throw in the fact that the Fusion Hybrid comes in a full $11,500 cheaper than its plug-in sister, and the argument for the Fusion Energi becomes even thinner.

14k-mile 1990 Nissan Hardbody is an unlikely time capsule

1990 Nissan Hardbody

I was five years old when my father purchased his very first new vehicle: a 1990 Nissan Hardbody identical in nearly every way to the one you see above. When new, that torquey 2.4-liter four-cylinder would snap the truck sideways in second and send the skinny rubber at the live rear axle chirping through fourth. I spent every family vacation for years crammed in the back under a camper shell, plowing roads through blankets with my Hot Wheels while we buzzed our way north from Knoxville to Mackinac State Park or south to Orlando.

It suffered my long and laborious stick-shift learning curve and the even more painful slog to passable vehicle control.

Saturday mornings were spent riding around gnawing on a pack of poptarts with Dad at the wheel of our little red truck and Dire Straits on the two-speaker cassette deck. The faithful pickup piled on miles over the years until eventually, I grew old enough to take the wheel myself. By then, the paint had faded more orange than red, the chassis bore scars from a number of bumps and bruises at the hands of everyone in the family and the engine sounded like someone had dumped a bag of hammers under the valve cover every time I hit the starter. It suffered my long and laborious stick-shift learning curve and the even more painful slog to passable vehicle control.

I bounced it off of guard rails, rock outcroppings and other cars, but the machine never once came close to laying down. At some point, only the cab and doors remained of the original sheetmetal. It carried me through high school and into college before I turned my attention elsewhere, and Dad continued to drive the old Hardbody to work and back until just last year, when he finally gave in and drove what was left of his first new vehicle to the scrap yard with over 300,000 miles on the original drivetrain.

That little truck was ingrained in the heartwood of my family tree, and this 14,000-mile example in Salem, Oregon is an identical clone in nearly every way. From the gray cloth bench seat to the awkward steering wheel and homely looks, this little machine is the unlikeliest of time capsules, and if I had the $7,500 asking price, I'd pay the sentimentality tax in a heartbeat to have it in my garage. You can check it out over at Bring a Trailer or view the original Craigslist ad. Someone give this machine the home it deserves.

Lotus: Third in points still matters

Lotus is determined that Kimi Raikkonen keeps hold of his third place in the Formula 1 drivers' standings, despite the Finn's recent claims that he does not want to attend the end of season FIA prizegiving. Raikkonen half-joked recently that if he could not win the championship then he would rather finish fourth overall so he could avoid going to Istanbul's festivities where the top three drivers are presented with their trophies

Vettel says Brazil form a total unknown

Formula 1 championship leader Sebastian Vettel says he is none the wiser about form for the title-deciding Brazilian Grand Prix after Friday practice given the uncertain weather forecast for the weekend. Vettel was second behind Lewis Hamilton's McLaren in both Friday sessions. "It was very slippery for everyone, quite hot today and in terms of track conditions not that easy," said Vettel

Funding Uncertainty Plagues Highways, But They Still Get Built

It’s funny how there always seems to be enough money for highways, but never enough for transit.
The portion of I-69 from Evansville to Indianapolis is well underway, even though no one knows where the funds to complete it will come from. The same can't be said for Indianapolis's transit plan. Photo: Urban Indy

Mercedes set to ditch Coanda exhaust

Mercedes is set to abandon its Coanda-effect exhaust for the final race of the season in a bid to try and get a better understanding of its tyre situation. After Nico Rosberg reverted to the non-Coanda design in Austin to assist the team's 2013 development programme, the team has elected to switch both its drivers to the old version for the final weekend of the season.

Get to Know: Daltyn England

This week’s featured iRacer may not even have time to read this, because he will probably be too busy celebrating his birthday. He certainly has a lot to celebrate. With a pretty successful iRacing career, a promising real world racing career, and on top of that, success on the soccer “pitches” in his Springfield, Illinois home, you could call him a triple threat — or you could call him “that annoying kid.”  Whatever you call him, you can’t deny Daltyn England is a successful iRacer. Daltyn has a lot to be proud about on iRacing and in real racing. On iRacing, he has scored 177 oval wins and nine road wins in a combined total of nearly 1450 races since joining the service in February of 2010. On the real [...]
