X-raid retains Holowczyc and Roma
Kryzsztof Holowczyc and Nani Roma will stay with the X-raid Mini squad for next year's Dakar Rally. The German team dominated this year's event, with Stephane Peterhansel winning from Roma, and Holowczyc challenging for victory before falling to 10th with a series of mechanical problems during the second week. Peterhansel and his co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret were confirmed as X-raid's lead pairing in May, while his team-mates have now also announced their participations in the South America-based event event

Finding A New Path To Success
Despite the fact that the term "crossover" has proliferated throughout the automotive market, there still isn't a clear definition of what, exactly, makes such a vehicle. And perhaps that's by the very definition of the word itself - a crossover can refer to anything that blends various elements of well-established genres. In the automotive market, crossovers carry traits of not only sport utility vehicles, but family sedans and minivans, as well.
Case in point: We'd never call the truck-based body-on-frame Cadillac Escalade anything but an SUV, but does the unibody Jeep Grand Cherokee, which offers better off-road capability, really count as a crossover? Most would say no. The line between these two classes is blurred and Nissan can be held partly to blame for the confusion, having switched its Pathfinder "SUV" back and forth between body-on-frame and unibody platforms twice now. The completely redesigned 2013 Nissan Pathfinder finds itself back on a unibody platform, sharing that distinction with the second generation that was sold from 1996-2004.
It's with this in mind that we can't wholeheartedly agree with Nissan's branding of the new Pathfinder as a "next-gen SUV." Oh sure, it's a more modern offering packed with features never before found in the rugged vehicle that Nissan has offered since the mid-1980s, but is it truly an SUV? Moreover, do buyers even care about such classifications these days?
Oh, heck. The SUV is dead. Long live the SUV!

Report: GM lawsuit over Einstein image use dismissed

Albert Einstein's image has been used to sell everything from computer software to life insurance. In 2009, General Motors used the legendary physicist's face it in an ad for the 2010 GMC Terrain. It ran only once in a single issue of People Magazine.
Hebrew University of Jerusalem sued the automaker in 2010, arguing Einstein's will gave the school all rights to the use of his image. This week, however, a Los Angeles court said those rights expired 55 years after the scientist's death.
"Now, nearly 60 years after his death, that persona should be freely available to those who seek to appropriate it as part of their own expression, even in tasteless ads," ruled US District Judge Howard Matz. "The obviously humorous ad for the 2010 Terrain having been published 55 years or more after Einstein's death, it is unlikely that any viewer of it could reasonably infer that Einstein... was endorsing the GMC Terrain."

Bianchi takes pole in disrupted session
Jules Bianchi made the perfect start to this weekend's Formula Renault 3.5 title decider, taking pole for race one in an incident-packed qualifying session. The Ferrari junior driver, who took the lead of the standings from Robin Frijns last time out at Paul Ricard , kept his composure in a session punctuated by red flags and full course yellows to always be near the top of the times. After an early delay caused by Yann Cunha's car stopping just after the pit exit, Bianchi went fastest as everyone finally set their first flying laps seven minutes in.

Motorsports: Running order set for 2012 Petit Le Mans

The 15th running of Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta is slated for this weekend, and there promises to be plenty of exciting racing in the last event of the American Le Mans Series. Despite being dropped from the World Endurance Championship in favor of the 6 Hours of Bahrain, the field of cars remains bountiful thanks to the European Le Mans Series joining in and making the 10-hour endurance race its series finale as well.
To set the starting order for tomorrow's race, each of the teams ran a 15 minute qualifying session this afternoon split up by class.
In P1 the Rebellion Racing Lola-Toyota qualified on pole, just ahead of the Muscle Milk Racing HPD ARX-03a that has dominated the class in ALMS this year. Rebillion Racing finished 5th in last year's event and are looking to add a victory at Petit Le Mans to their extensive list of wins already achieved this year.
In the hotly contested GT class it was a pair of Extreme Speed Ferrari 458 Italias leading the way in a 1-2, followed by BMW and Corvette. The SRT Viper team, constantly improving since their debut at Mid-Ohio, qualified in 6th and 10th.
After being extensively repaired from Wednesday's crash, the Nissan DeltaWing posted a qualifying time on par with the P2 class, netting a fast lap of 1:12.850, eight-tenths off the quickest P2 car.

Toyota Prius now best-selling model(s) in California
We've heard the Toyota Prius jokingly called the State Bird of California, but recent sales data shows that the world's most popular hybrid is, in fact, the best-selling car in the state. Well, the best-selling vehicle line, at least, since the Prius now comes in four variants.
If you add up sales of the Prius Liftback (aka, the regular Prius), the C, V and Plug-In models, you get 46,380 units for the first three quarters of 2012, according to numbers from the California New Car Dealers Association and reported by Bloomberg. That's enough to move the Prius from fourth place last year to first this year in the sales rankings in America's most populous state. In fact, roughly a quarter of the Priuses that Toyota sold in the US were in California. Reports of $5 gallons of gas are relatively recent, but we have to assume that the state's long-time high gas prices are playing a role in pushing the Prius to the pinnacle there. Nationwide, Bloomberg says, the Prius is in seventh place ("by sales volume among car models").
The Prius is already the best-selling car in Japan, and has been for years, even though the Honda Fit has been nipping at its heals. Worldwide, the Prius family was the third best-selling nameplate in the first quarter of 2012, behind the Toyota Corolla and the Ford Focus.

Thomas Lewandowski should be no stranger to readers of inRacingNews. From Day One his JR Motorsports entry has been a front runner in the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship. After coming hime third in the inaugural season, the Buffalo-based sim-racer slipped to an unlucky P13 in 2011 – but scored his first win with a dominant win at Dover in which he led 133 of 200 laps. The recently completed NiSWC brought good and bad news for Lewandowski – he fared (slightly) better in the overall reckoning, finishing deadlocked for P11/12 in the points race with Michael J Johnson but being shut-out of the winners circle. DeltaWing suffers 7g crash
Highcroft Racing is optimistic it can get the DeltaWing back on track on Thursday after the car sustained a 7g crash in a big crash during Wednesday's practice for the Petit Le Mans event at Road Atlanta. Gunnar Jeannette's Nissan-backed car rolled and crashed heavily against the wall after it was hit by a GTC class Porsche as he was trying to overtake ahead of the final corner. The car was heavily damaged, and although Jeannette was taken to the medical centre for checks, he was released with no injuries
